To give candidates the confidence and ability to deal with a number of life threatening situations specifically in infants and children. This course will meet Ofsted standards for childcare settings, so is essential for nursery workers and childminders as well as babysitters and parents who want a better knowledge of paediatric first aid. There are no pre-requisites for attending this course. The course is in two parts, the first of which is Paediatric First Aid detailed above. The second part covers:
- Recognise and administer first aid to an infant/child with injuries to bones, joints and muscles.
- Recognise and administer first aid to an infant/child with head and spinal injuries.
- Recognise and administer first aid to an infant/child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose.
- Recognise and administer emergency first aid to an infant/child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness.
- Sickle cell crisis
- Diabetic emergencies
- Asthma attack
- Allergic reaction
- Meningitis
- Febrile convulsions
- Recognise and administer first aid to an infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat or cold.
- Recognise and administer first aid to an infant/child who has sustained an electric shock.
- Recognise and administer first aid to an infant/child with burns or scalds.
- Recognise and administer first aid to an infant/child who has been poisoned.
- Recognise and administer first aid to an infant/child who has been bitten or stung.
- Recognise and administer first aid to an infant/child with minor injuries.
- Understand how to complete records relating to illnesses, injuries and emergencies.
